AFC Mansfield fell at the last hurdle in the League Cup when they went down to the odd goal in 3 at The Forest Town Arena.
After missing 3 gilt edged opportunities in the first half they went into the break 1-0 down after Brian Lawrence powerfully headed home on 43 minutes.
The second half saw both sides have further goalscoring chances but the tie looked settled on 81 minutes when Grant Allott was harshly judged to have handled in the box after the ball was fired at him and ricocheted off his knee and onto his arm. Sam Smith converted the penalty kick to make it 0-2.
But almost immediately The Bulls hit back, Joe Naylor firing past Andrew Sneath to reduce the arrears. This made it an uncomfortable finish for Handsworth and the relief was evident on the final whistle. A good competitive game and a credit to both sides.
